Control soil erosion by planting indigenous trees

Our soil is our life giver. As we enter the monsoon season, soil erosion becomes a matter of grave worry for all, especially for people and livestock near hilly areas and river banks. If there is a loss in the fertile top soil, the productive capacity of the land gets compromised which in turn poses a huge risk to our food security. Some of the human-induced factors of soil erosion are felling of trees with deep roots to clear space for construction, deforestation, loss of vegetation, rapid urbanisation, etc.

Even though soil erosion is a natural phenomenon, we can reduce its impact by planting more trees and bushes which are good in holding the soil together, planting grass and creepers in and around farmlands and riverbanks, spreading mulch on bare grounds, building embankments, etc.

Share with MyGov Assam your take on how soil erosion can be minimised by plantation of indigenous trees along the riverbanks and hilly areas. You may also share any success story in this regard along with relevant photographs/videos.

Rain water conservation, digging of ponds and plantation scientifically are the necessary steps to stop erosion of soil and prevention of flood. Long term projects should be taken into action in this regard.

Soil erosion can be stopped in hilly areas by looking out for terrace farming. This has dual benefit , no. 1 is , it can help prevent soil erosion and no. 2 is , it can help gain some amount of profits from those agriculture done. The plan of plantation in hilly areas should be very precise, otherwise it can lead to great loss.
Moreover in other places near rivers, where people face a great loss, we can opt. for placing big boulders and tress , where this problem happens.

One of the best ways that we can prevent erosion is to plant vegetation with deep roots that help to hold the soil in place. This is especially important in areas that are more vulnerable to erosion, such as along rivers, streams, and on hillsides
By using no-till farming methods and the minimum disturbance, the delicate structure of the soil can be protected and erosion is significantly reduced compared to tillage cultivation.

Planting more coconut trees will help. Coconut tree acquires less space and its root is deeper and wider.

There is a plant called "Kal Vayai"(Tamil language), this plant helps to remove toxics from the soil. It removes unwanted chemicals from the soil.
