Control soil erosion by planting indigenous trees

Our soil is our life giver. As we enter the monsoon season, soil erosion becomes a matter of grave worry for all, especially for people and livestock near hilly areas and river banks. If there is a loss in the fertile top soil, the productive capacity of the land gets compromised which in turn poses a huge risk to our food security. Some of the human-induced factors of soil erosion are felling of trees with deep roots to clear space for construction, deforestation, loss of vegetation, rapid urbanisation, etc.

Even though soil erosion is a natural phenomenon, we can reduce its impact by planting more trees and bushes which are good in holding the soil together, planting grass and creepers in and around farmlands and riverbanks, spreading mulch on bare grounds, building embankments, etc.

Share with MyGov Assam your take on how soil erosion can be minimised by plantation of indigenous trees along the riverbanks and hilly areas. You may also share any success story in this regard along with relevant photographs/videos.

For areas that fall directly on the flow of river, various new materials have be innovated which controls and keeps a check on soil erosion for years. But for other areas, mulch matt can be used, it uses coconut fibres and jute which can be procured locally .also instead of only focussing on indigenous trees(assuming it will take years to fully develop) we can use fast spreading shrubs.. which will grow immediately and help to resolve the immediate problem at hand.

At first I want to say that to reduce soil losses,at first we have to produce more trees and then we have to maintain river banks propely.last I will say that reduce chemical fertilizer in soil actually it breaks the binding property in the soil.

Maximum Soil erosion caused by river Brahmaputra during flood, From Dibrugarh to Tepzur avg width of river is 10km but same river flows 1.25Km near Guwahati. Until unless reducing width of river, soil erosion not possible. Dredging and filup soil in both bank with protecting technology like wiremess boulder, shit pile and after that planting indigenous tree can resolve permanently soil erosion. Without Engineering Technology soil erosion not possible. Dipankar Das,B-tech,PGP-IDM,PGD-SRD

Assam is flood affected state. Every year flood affects a large area of Assam. We should plantation tree plants in flood affected area for obstacle erosion of river Brahmaputra. Planting trees among agricultural crops helps to protect the soil from erosion, particularly after crops are harvested. The trees will give some protection from rain splash. Fruit, trees, legume trees for fodder or firewood and alley cropping all help reduce soil erosion.

Rain water conservation, digging of ponds and plantation scientifically are the necessary steps to stop erosion of soil and prevention of flood. Long term projects should be taken into action in this regard.

Soil health decides the agricultural growth of a state. To avoid soil erosion plantation of trees with strong root plants will be protectable. Particularly for river bank trees like coconut, teek, palmyra trees will strongly protect the soil layers and hold them in their fibrous broad and strong roots. Additional income also will be get through the coconut, palmyra products. These trees also make tge river view as pleasant to view.
For hilly regions, suitable trees are neem, teek, gouva.
