Assam with a population of 31,160,272 as in 2011 census has a female Diaspora of 15,214,345. The sex ratio is 954 females per 1000 males and the literacy rate is 67.27%. The state doesn’t have a slum population like many other states of the country.
Open defecation is one of the prime causes of public health problems, especially in living spaces that are thickly populated. It arises partly due to unavailability of toilets and partly due to behavioural instincts. It is counted amongst one of the major sustainable development goals that the state of Assam is trying to achieve.
Although the urban population of Assam is not very much prone to Open Defecation, yet some percentage of the thickly populated areas or migrated population seem to have access to Open Defecation. However, most of the Urban population of Assam still lacks a proper knowledge about using a Sanitary Latrine (with 2 Pits) instead of an Insanitary one (Kaccha or with single Pit). Most of even the educated urban population are also seen to be prone to Open Urination.
These activities, on the part of the citizens, not only compromise the health & hygiene of the society but also brings down human dignity of a civilized society.
Through this competition, it is expected to get some new and feasible ideas to eradicate Open Defecation/Urination from the state of Assam. Here, we want to motivate the mass people of Assam to construct and use sanitary latrines or convert the existing insanitary latrines to sanitary ones for a healthier life by depicting the possible preventive measures/solutions that can award Assam an ODF status at the earliest.
