Jitu Saikia and his friends have set up 'Majuli Agro-Hub' at Polongoni village in Majuli with support from Agriculture Dept. Having benefited from various Govt schemes, the group has motivated many others to give a shot at organic farming.

How is organic farming done in Assam?
Soil and crop management in organic farming in Assam. The organic farming system encourages mixed/intercropping, crop rotation and the use of fertilizers to maintain soil fertility. Growing the same crop year after year destroys the fertility of the soil.

Is organic food grown without pesticides?
Organic produce must be grown without the use of chemicals or pesticides. Farmers must use natural means to control insects and weeds. Only natural fertilizers such as compost, are allowed. After harvesting, farmers cannot treat food with preservatives.
