Assam has a rich tradition of weaving and handloom. It has been existing in the Assamese society since ancient times and occupies a position of pride. The Assamese women, irrespective of caste, class, community or status, used to weave clothes and garments for the entire family. Even the ancient scriptures like the Kalika Puran has descriptions of uses of silk from cocoons and dyeing techniques. The handloom sector also holds multiple opportunities for commercial production. Thus, MyGov Assam seeks suggestions from citizens on ways to develop and create awareness on this age-old tradition of handloom.
