First step: A proper study has to be conducted all over the city over a time span of a year. To see which time of the day the traffic is dense and which time it is light. Also months matter as festivals bring about their own crowd.
Step two: after the survey is completed a plan should be made. I will be submitting a PowerPoint presentation to show some steps that can be taken to make traffic move around with a decent amount of momentum

The western Automobile trend has been seen in Assam. And so a number of companies are producing and importing unnecessary models and parts which is on demand only by the young generation. E.g. High power CC bikes, sound polluting silencers, sound polluting horns, high power halogen bulbs. Our generation needs education not the Western Automobile trend.

As a teacher I would like to suggest that driving license should be issued only after the age of 21.
It seems that in India the generation becomes fully matured only after they have passed their graduation level.

An architect by profession, I would like to suggest long term measures that could help in better traffic management of the city.First and foremost, Railway lines passing through the center of the city needs to be rethinked. Alternative route may be developed and gradually most railway traffic can be shifted to create less havoc within the city. Second, more Vehicular bridges perpendicular to the railway lines be encouraged for smooth flow of traffic within city.

1.Problem resides in the minds of the driver: the overtakes at the wrong side, the parking at no-parking slots, ignorance of traffic signs, not respecting the traffic rules are some of the best examples of the lack of proper training from the Driver License managements.
2.In Paltan Bazaar area there are officially 3 bus stops but cityBuses plans to make bus stops at will cause massive jams all over the area.
3.Excellent Traffic Management by Shillong Traffic Police: We should Learn frm them.

1) Start wih good sense of driving and parking on the road
2) Please have a system to control the city animals like cows which sometimes sit down in the middle of the road or standing in group
3) Install cameras in all major places and have a centralised visual monitoring centre which will give all the sources of problems and will be able to act smartly with less human resources on the field.. hope all the comments n suggestions will get some value to find a solution

Unplanned parking on the main roads of the city is I think one of the most important cause of traffic jam. Instead of putting No Parking zone beside the main roads, if citizens are allowed to park their vehicle parallaly (single line) to the road I guess some unnecessary traffic will be controlled. As even though no parking is marked people used to park their vehicle on those spots. In few places parkings are incrased to even 2 lines.

Guwahati Traffic could be controlled only by "Strict, Modern & Polished Traffic System" inspite of challenges like densed population, rude city buses, In numerous Uber/OLA, Scarcity of Road over Bridges, Lack of Camera Terminals, Potholes, congested market connecting roads, Low-profiled carriage vans, trucks etc etc etc

All traffic lights must be functional. It is seen that traffic jam is mostly due to the unruly City Buses, so they must be directed to move in a particular lane rather than criss crossing every time.
