Control soil erosion by planting indigenous trees

Our soil is our life giver. As we enter the monsoon season, soil erosion becomes a matter of grave worry for all, especially for people and livestock near hilly areas and river banks. If there is a loss in the fertile top soil, the productive capacity of the land gets compromised which in turn poses a huge risk to our food security. Some of the human-induced factors of soil erosion are felling of trees with deep roots to clear space for construction, deforestation, loss of vegetation, rapid urbanisation, etc.

Even though soil erosion is a natural phenomenon, we can reduce its impact by planting more trees and bushes which are good in holding the soil together, planting grass and creepers in and around farmlands and riverbanks, spreading mulch on bare grounds, building embankments, etc.

Share with MyGov Assam your take on how soil erosion can be minimised by plantation of indigenous trees along the riverbanks and hilly areas. You may also share any success story in this regard along with relevant photographs/videos.

(i) Contour ploughing: this refers to ploughing along contour lines. (ii) Terrace farming: construction of steps along the hilly areas by cutting the rock layers to reduce the flow of rivers. (iii) Plugging of gullies to prevent gully erosion. This are some step to prevent soil erosion

Depend of the river slope; there are different types of the protection measures. For steep slope river or high velocities of the flow, need to have a protection with riprap.
Other river bank protection concepts are:
Increasing the resistance of the bank, (riprap, concrete blocks, stones, plantation …)
Decreasing the slope of the bank
Enlargement of the river bed
Using the epis
Protection with concrete or masonry inclined walls
Geotextiles etc.

Coir Geotextile
Coir geotextile fabric consists of woven fibers of coconut. The fabric is available in rolls that can be rolled out over the surface of an embankment, preventing soil erosion on newly graded slopes. Sometimes vegetation can be established over the geotextile, so that the roots of the vegetation growing up through the fabric interlock with the fibers. Unlike non-woven geotextile fabric made from synthetic polypropylene or other materials.
