Control soil erosion by planting indigenous trees

Our soil is our life giver. As we enter the monsoon season, soil erosion becomes a matter of grave worry for all, especially for people and livestock near hilly areas and river banks. If there is a loss in the fertile top soil, the productive capacity of the land gets compromised which in turn poses a huge risk to our food security. Some of the human-induced factors of soil erosion are felling of trees with deep roots to clear space for construction, deforestation, loss of vegetation, rapid urbanisation, etc.

Even though soil erosion is a natural phenomenon, we can reduce its impact by planting more trees and bushes which are good in holding the soil together, planting grass and creepers in and around farmlands and riverbanks, spreading mulch on bare grounds, building embankments, etc.

Share with MyGov Assam your take on how soil erosion can be minimised by plantation of indigenous trees along the riverbanks and hilly areas. You may also share any success story in this regard along with relevant photographs/videos.

Dear All,
We should firstly increase the water level in the soil, majority time our plenty rain water wasting & gone to creeks, When we watering our soil then it will not satured for many years, secondly we have to try other crops so that quality of soil not get degraded, thirdly we should use organic fertilizers like old leaf's & son khat because of its use we can maintain soil quality.

Best Regards

Ways to prevent soil erosion--
1)Planting trees and grass to cover and bind the soil. Plants may be herbs, creepers, wild flowers and small trees
2) Applying mulches.
3) Matting the soil.
4) Contour farming.
5) Creation of wind breakers by planting evergreen trees.
6) Geotextiles help prevent soil erosion especially on steep slopes, helping to protect the water. They allow drainage of water without excess runoff pollution

When the soil is saturated or unable to absorb more water. Plants also help absorb some of the water in the soil. These effects make it harder for water to wash the soil away. Plants also help reduce erosion in other ways, such as breaking the wind that might blow dry top soil away. In Assam it is very much required.

Most important steps which can be taken to control the soil erosion in hilly areas: (i) Contour ploughing: this refers to ploughing along contour lines. (ii) Terrace farming: construction of steps along the hilly areas by cutting the rock layers to reduce the flow of rivers. (iii) Plugging of gullies to prevent gully erosion.
