Witch hunting has been one of the most inhuman practices prevalent in various parts of the world, taking the lives of several innocent people. Innumerable people have been killed mercilessly in the name of witch hunting. As the Assam Witch Hunting Bill, 2015, is becoming an Act now, a new dawn has appeared for the people of India.

Recently, President Ram Nath Kovind gave his approval to the Assam Witch Hunting (Prohibition, Prevention and Protection) Bill passed three years ago. The Bill, once passed, will make witch-hunting a cognisable, non-bailable and non-compoundable offence in the country.

Under this Act, punishment of upto 7 years and a fine of upto Rs 5 lakh will be imposed on the perpetrator for branding someone as a witch on the basis of superstitious beliefs. If anyone violates the Act and someone is killed after being labelled as a witch, Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) will be imposed. The punishment for pushing a person to suicide may lead to imprisonment and a fine of upto Rs 5 lakh.

MyGov Assam seeks suggestions from citizens on ways to make the people of Assam aware about this Bill in every nook and corner of the State and contribute towards a healthy society.

In order to create a change from grass-root level the information about this law should be given in general knowledge books and the civics portion of the syllabus. Moreover the regional news channel and any television series encouraging the witch craft should be banned.
It can also be spread to remote are through newspaper or distribution of leaflets and phamplet.

Witch hunting is a criminal offence which need to be stopped as soon as possible. This practices are done due to some superstitious beliefs in some part of our state. The people of those places are educated but they lack awareness of the crime.Educated youths or some organisations should create awareness camps in those areas and make those people aware of the crime and a law should be very strict for the culprits and punishment must be at instant so that no other people may be afraid to repeat.

(STEPS TO ENSURE PROPER IMPLEMENTATION OF THE WITCH HUNTING BILL)
1. Carrying out free legal aid camps at village level which will help identify probable victims at an early stage.
2.Women who are above 40 years of age, especially those who have lost their husband constitute among the most common victims of witch hunting, so in such a case scenario, such vulnerable women should be identified.
3.State sponsored documentary films be showcased in rural areas.
