Agriculture is one of the primary revenue earning sector of Assam, with over 70 percent of the State's population directly or indirectly relying on agriculture for their livelihood. Owing to various advantages such as fertile soil, favourable climatic conditions, rich biodiversity etc, Assam has immense untapped potential in the agriculture sector waiting to be utilised.

Assam produces both food and cash crops. While the principal food crops include rice, maize, pulses, potato, wheat, etc., the chief cash crops are tea, jute, oilseeds, sugarcane, cotton and tobacco. However, in recent times, there has also been a substantial boom in the production of fruit crops and spice crops, some of which have a growing demand in the international market. A handful of farmers and young entrepreneurs are also resorting to organic farming and contributing towards popularising the concept of organic farming in many districts of Assam. There are also endless export possibilities in the State which can be achieved with the right mixture of entrepreneurial strategies, introduction of a proper market and infrastructure, use of modern and scientific technologies, etc.

Government of Assam strives to increase the agricultural yield by boosting production in the coming time through use of green revolution related technologies, facilitating employment opportunities through improved agriculture centric trade, business and commerce, promoting organic farming and export of local produce, betterment of alternative agri-food initiatives, provision of necessary infrastructure facilities, use of scientific methods and technologies in agricultural production etc among other steps.

MyGov Assam solicits suggestions on how to fully utilise the untapped potential in the agricultural sector and make it into one of the flourishing sectors of the State.
