June 21 is the International Day of Yoga as declared by United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). Yet again, for the third time, entire world is gearing up to observe the Day, which is also informally called World Yoga Day. This day is observed to make world citizens aware that regular practice of Yoga improves your physical, mental and intellectual health. Practising Yoga can prevent as well as cure diseases also improves our immune system naturally.
Yoga originated in India and has been practiced here for more than
5000 years. It was in September 27, 2014, when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the
first time proposed the idea of observing International Day of Yoga in
his speech in UNGA. Then, on December 11, 2014, the draft resolution for International Day of Yoga adopted without vote, receiving support from 177 Member States who co-sponsors it, which was the highest number of co-sponsors for any UNGA resolution ever.
PM, Modi suggests at the UNGA that June 21, has been chosen as the International Day of Yoga because the day is the longest day in Northern Hemisphere regions and of great significance for people in many parts of the world.
The celebration of International Day of Yoga is being supported by many spiritual and other leaders of national and international repute. On the very first year of declaration of the day 192 countries out of 193 member countries, except Yemen, of the United Nations, celebrated the day with great enthusiasm world over.
It may be mentioned here that, PM Modi in his ‘Man Ki Baat’ through All India Radio, insisted citizen to celebrate the day practicing three generations together and upload those visuals through MyGov Portals.
